The Problem
The factory, 50 Kms from Delhi has 1450 KVA SKL DG Set. The Genset is cooled through Cooling Circuit connected to Cooling Tower.
The Cooling water is taken from a borewell and has the following analysis.
pH 7.14
Total Dissolved Solids 1900 ppm
Chlorides 520 ppm
Total Hardness 882 ppm
Calcium Hardness 380 ppm
Magnesium Hardness 502 ppm
Total alkalinity 224 ppm
Sulphates 317 ppm
As the water was very hard, tough white scale formation was anticipated in the Heat Exchanger. The treatment by softening was working out to be very difficult & expensive, therefore and COLLOID-A-TRON was installed.
The Solution
In order to prevent the formation of hard water scale depositing on Heat Exchanger a 4" COLLOID-A-TRON was installed on the main header.
On installation of COLLOID-A- TRON on 1/7/90 the performance was closely monitored. The raw water and recirculating water was analysed regularly to ascertain any deposition of scale in the oil cooler and Heat Exchanger. The Concentration level of Cooling Tower was kept at 1.5 whereby the total Hardness of recirculating water went upto 1386 ppm on 27/10/90, the Heat Exchanger was inspected and found to be free of scale. On the basis of the Performance of COLLOID-A-TRON in 1450 KVA DG set. repeat orders were placed for 3 Nos. of 500 KVA Kirloskar Cummins DG Sets and 2 Nos. of Boilers.
The Saving
Since installation of the COLLOID-A-TRON the Maintenance Department is not using any chemicals thereby saving not only direct chemical cost per month but also labour cost of dosing, monitoring and maintenance.
