The Customer
This hotel is a prestigious and centrally located hotel situated in Calcutta City, 11, Ganesh Chandra Avenue, Calcutta - 13. They have installed COLLOID -A-TRONs of size CAT 2" and CAT 3/8" in their 1x20 TR A.C. plant cooling water circuit.
The Problem
Hard scale formation in their 1 x 20 TR A.C. plant condensor resulted into less cooling, reduced efficiency and increased down time. They had to replace the condensor after 4 years. The raw water is taken from a borewell and the water analysis report is detailed below:

Total Hardness 1026 ppm
Total Dissolved Solids 1130 ppm
Calcium Hardness 620 ppm
Total Alkalinity 402 ppm
Chlorides 914 ppm
Sulphates 98 ppm
Tough white scale was deposited on the condensor tubes which was removed manually and chemically once a month which not only led to increased downtime but also resulted in damage to the condensor leading to leakages within a short span of 4 years.
The Solution
After 4 years of use, they had to change the A.C. Plant condensor. In order to prevent the formation of hard water scale depositing on the condensor tube, COLLOID-A-TRON s of size CAT 2" x 1 and CAT 3/8" x 1 were installed on 8.3.93.
Performance
After of the the installation COLLOID-A-TRONs, the performance was closely monitored by analysing the raw and recirculating water regularly to ascertain effectiveness of the COLLOID-A-TRON. The reports revealed that there was no scale deposition in the condensors and on physical inspection the same was confirmed. They now clean their system once a year, and there was soft scale deposit on the condensor tubes.
