THE CUSTOMER

Modi Rubber Ltd. manufacture automobile tyres under collaboration of Continental Gummi-Werke Aktiege-sellschaft, West Germany, at Modipuram, u.P.

THE PROBLEM

The Corporate Office at DDA Shopping Centre at New Friends Colony, New Delhi, is centrally air conditioned by 3 x 40 TR, 1 x 80 TR & 3 x 10 TR AC units. The freon condensors are cooled through a central cooling circuit connected to a series of cooling towers.

The cooling water is taken from the borewell and the water hardness has been increasing as per the detailed analysis below:

As on 20.2.88                   As on 3.10.88

                                                                     pH                               7.67                                      7.12

Total Dissolved Solids                           2870 ppm.                          4450 ppm.

Total Hardness                           1040 ppm.                          1536 ppm.

Calcium Hardness                             560 ppm.                            658 ppm.

Magnesium Hardness                            480 ppm.                            878 ppm.

Total Alkalinity                            232 ppm.                            260 ppm.

                                                           Chlorides                            640 ppm.                            980 ppm.

                                                           Sulphates                           288 ppm.                            438 ppm.

As the cooling water was very hard it was necessary to treat the water to avoid precipitation of hard water scale in the condensors.

THE SOLUTION

In order to prevent the formation of hard water scale in the condensors of AC Plants COLLOID-A-TRON of sizesCAT2," x 3 and CAT 4" x 1 were installed on 20.2.88.

After the installation of the COLLOID-A- TRON the performance was closely monitored by analysing the raw and recirculation water regularly to ascertain the effectiveness of COLLOID-A- TRON. lt was observed that the water hardness had risen from 1040 ppm on 20.2.88 to 1536 ppm on 3.10.88. Periodic visual inspections revealed that there was no scale deposition in the condensers despite the increase in hardness over the period.

THE SAVING

Considering the high hardness of the raw water conventional treatment of the water would have proved very expensive not only in terms of high capital cost of the equipment but also recurring costs of salt, resins, chemicals etc. Further considering the sudden in- crease in the hardness of the water from 1040 ppm to 1536 ppm, increased costs would have been inevitable if conventional treatment was adopted. As the COLLOID-A-TRON has no recurring costs and can handle variable water qualities, the Customer has saved considerable sums of monies.
